Theatre Camp | Dir Nick Lieberman & Molly Gordon | 2023 | 1h 33m | USA | Comedy / Drama | English | 12A
This Festival Director's pick from the Sundance Film Festival, a feel-good, life-affirming and joyful off-beat comedy celebrating anyone who doesn't fit in. Â Â
Theatre Camp is a mockumentary reminiscent of the films of Christopher Guest (Best In Show), following the trials and tribulations of an Upstate New York Theatre Camp attempting to create and stage a masterpiece, good enough to save the camp from imminent closure. Â
Tony Award winner Ben Platt and Molly Gordon star in the original comedy – lifelong best friends and drama instructors at a rundown camp in upstate New York. When clueless tech-bro Troy (Jimmy Tatro) arrives to run the property (into the ground), Amos, Rebecca-Diane, and production manager Glenn (Noah Galvin) band together with the staff and students, staging a masterpiece to keep their beloved summer camp afloat.   Â
Theater Camp won a Special Jury Award at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and received critical acclaim at the SXSW Film Festival.  Â
★★★★ 'A tight 94 minutes packed to the minute with visual gags and comments you don’t want to miss' Consequence
★★★★ 'A sense of joy emanates from nearly every frame of Theater Camp' The Observer
★★★★ 'Being a theater geek isn’t required to enjoy Theater Camp, but it certainly can’t hurt' IndieWire
