Stanley Yelnats' family is cursed with bad luck. Falsely sentenced to months at Camp Green Lake, he and his campmates are forced to dig holes to 'build character'. What their warden doesn't tell them, is that they are digging in

search of treasure hidden somewhere in the desert that may be the answer to the Yelnats misfortune.

On his daughter’s scorching hot birthday, unemployed and divorced William “D-Fens” Foster tries to reach his ex-wifes home to see his daughter. The unstable man becomes so frustrated with the various problems he sees in the world that he begins to lash out violently.
