This role involves supporting our Short Film Manager by reviewing the suitability of submissions for consideration. You do not have to be based in the UK to apply, as all the viewing will be done remotely (access to a computer, and a stable internet connection is necessary). Main Duties and Responsibilities On average pre-selectors will view between 5-6 hours of content as we encourage voting from multiple selectors to ensure fairness. CFF receives around 300 submissions on average, but overall hours may increase if we go beyond this total - so some flexibility is encouraged. Viewing, and assisting with the submission process through our festival platform FilmFreeway.Our short film submissions will be from all types of genres but will be no more than 20 minutes in length. Meetings with key festival members, including members of the Awarding Jury (this will help you gain insight into the festival & filmmaking industry). Key Skills/ Traits An understanding of film festival standards and a critical eye. Of course enthusiasm is the most important! Internships General Internships We are seeking hard working and enthusiastic individuals who would like an internship with a film and media organisation. We are a media charity that holds an annual film festival, live events, yearly film screenings and programming, runs industry training, masterclasses and talks, education programmes and community media projects. We will give you an opportunity to work across all our organisational strands - festival, industry and events, community, education, and charity to gain valuable experience in varied roles within the creative industry. You may work as a production assistant on one of our live events or online masterclasses; a researcher or content creator for our social media; a designer of digital assets for one of our programmes or as an event planner for one of our live events. We are looking for adaptable and enthusiastic people who are ready for a challenge and want to try their hand at lots of different roles within the media. Internships typically last 3-6 months and involve a time commitment of 6 hours a week, including our weekly team meetings. While working with us you will gain access to our networks and we’ll share opportunities in our organisation and the wider media industry with you. We’ll help you with CV, job application and interview skills. You will be given an open reference and credit for your work, an opportunity to meet others, develop a network of people with a shared passion for film and to communicate your enthusiasm for film! Resources Page for the Black Tide : The SS Torrey Canyon Oil Spill A powerful heritage and screen project retracing the story of the SS Torrey Canyon oil spill through archive, oral history, first-person accounts and film. Run by the Mor Media Charity team with partners across Cornwall and the Isle of Scilly in the run up to the 60th Anniversary of the disaster, with principal funding by the Heritage Lottery. THE SS TORREY CANYON OIL SPILL A powerful heritage and screen project retracing the story of the SS Torrey Canyon oil spill through archive, oral history, first-person accounts and film. THE PROJECT The 60th anniversary approaches of Britain’s worst shipping disaster, the SS Torrey Canyon supertanker, which ran aground off the western coast of Cornwall, spilling 100,000 tonnes of crude oil and making International headlines in 1967. Over the next two years, Mor Media Charity is set to document the stories of the spill and the clean-up operation that caused enormous damage to marine life, the livelihoods of local people and also changed the way people viewed the environment, galvanising Cornish communities, many of whom are now in their 70s. Black Tide carries profound significance for everyone, symbolising the ongoing evolution of our understanding of environmental impacts, especially those resulting from oil spills and their consequences on marine life, coastlines, and communities. Acknowledging this legacy enhances environmental awareness and accountability; it connects younger generations, families, and broader communities, emphasising the real and enduring effects of environmental disasters.This historical event calls for united action and responsible stewardship, motivating everyone to engage in creating a sustainable future. Asher began his career as a screenwriter, developing projects with production companies such as The Forge Entertainment, Range Media Partners, and Gaumont UK. In 2021, Asher directed his debut short film, MEAT, produced by Scala Productions. Meat won multiple awards, playing at numerous BAFTA/Oscar qualifying festivals and culminating in a selection for the César Académie's ‘Golden Nights’ Programme. Asher's second short film THE RABBI'S SON (2022) won the Pears Short Film Fund, as well as playing at a number of BAFTA/Oscar qualifying festivals including Athens International Film Festival. In 2023, Asher began production on SMALL GODS, produced by Sovereign Films. Expanding on Meat, Small Gods is a docufiction drama inspired by the lives of its lead actors and wider Batwa community. STATEMENT Flo first mentioned the concept of small gods (ibigirwamana) the very day we met. Like almost all of the indigenous Batwa tribe, Flo has no access to her family’s ancestral lands, which were stolen to make way for conservation and tourism. When asked what the Batwa miss most from their old home in the forest, Flo mentioned animist deities attached to specific trees, caves, or water bodies. She referred to them as small gods. As we began building a narrative around Flo’s experiences, the concept suggested further resonances. The writing process started around the dinner table and continued late each night, as the cast recalled events from their lives. The whole crew was immediately captivated by the rich and epic drama with which the tales were told. From their own perspective, they were heroes fighting for their dignity, but to an uncaring outsider they were no more than street performers. Stylistically, Small Gods aims to depict their lives on a canvas just as mythic as the one they narrated. In doing so, it risks running against the traditions of documentary-infused cinema, in which first-time actors are rarely asked to plumb the same theatrical depths as trained professionals. Fortunately there was no doubt in my mind that they were up to the task. Flo and Bizi have, after all, been acting their whole lives - performing songs, dances, or impressions for the tourists that now flock to see Uganda’s gorillas. In the case of Bizi, this is how we crossed paths. Known among his friends as ‘monkey man’, Bizi will frequently drop to his knees and perform his gorilla impression at the sight of a foreigner. One such foreigner couldn’t get over the mis-match between his deep well of talent and his stature by the roadside. Making the film was a stand against this injustice. By taking the topic of performance as a thematic subject, platforming the casts’ overlooked talent, and anchoring the camera in their perspective, the hope was that we could somehow defy and defeat the view of tourist, he who comes for the gorillas but passed Bizi by… Having worked with the cast since our first short film together in 2021, I have been lucky enough to witness the transformation Small Gods has made in their lives. With the immense help of the production team, we have not only been able to purchase her and Bizi their own plots where they now grow food and graze their new cattle, but also build safe sturdy homes for them to live in for years to come. After three years in school, Tuyi now speaks English better than I speak Rufumbira, and I hope he will get the chance to answer questions about the film directly. I am forever grateful to have been able to enable this process - it all feels like a small miracle. You should be organised, proactive and practical, and anticipate the needs of the team. You must have good communication skills, be able to foresee and evaluate potential problems, and deal with them calmly. You need to be working with people of all ages and should understand consent. Being skilled in image-manipulation and image software working with the festival social media team, with good office skills, paying close attention to detail would be an advantage, as would having your own digital camera. As a Steward, you will join the festival team in delivering the festival weekend at The Poly, Falmouth in November and outreach community events throughout November. You are the front line of our flagship event and will be an important part of the team. Your role is to make customers feel welcome and enjoy their experience of the festival. You will help make sure the screenings of films progress in a smooth and timely manner, help audiences to the right screen and their seats. You will need to attend a volunteer briefing and training sessions in November. Speak to festival attendees, both public and professional, getting their feedback and conducting surveys - excellent record-keeping is essential for this. You will also be required to collate data and load it onto a project log. You will be responsible for motivating other volunteers to assist you. You will be venue-based during the festival. Create content that promotes audience interaction, increases audience presence before the festival, encourages audience participation, and attendance. You will work as part of a team to develop the larger festival output. These letters provide the catalyst and inspiration for the production, and also the overarching visual motif, dialogue and compelling lyrics of the soundtrack. AiTHERION Motivation Space: Aithra's Call Directed by Panos Anestis "Aithra's Call" is an animated VR short film, originally projected in 360°, as the first part of the interactive exhibition "Democracy & Eudaimonia" which is hosted in AiTHERION (former Aylon Lyceum), in Athens, Greece. In the exhibition’s introductory Motivation Space, "Aithra", a digital A.I. entity with seemingly godlike powers, claims that she is a powerful computer system which built AiTHERION for the sole purpose of better understanding us humans. As an artificial intelligence entity, she “can make infinite calculations” and she “is constantly learning”. What Aithra cannot understand, however, and to which she needs our help, is a simple question: how do people make decisions? paSSive poWer directed by JB Singh Ghuman, Jr. Wind, Lasers, Chanting.. “paSSive poWer” aims at putting focus on the more subtle energies of human co-existence otherwise deemed as meekness. The Matriarx directed by Julia Bruton The Matriarx is an immersive VR experience taking the heroine and hero into a world where matriarchal structures have endured. It is a parallel world in which people treat each other based on a different set of societal rules. This has its effect on social, economic and the political life. Family and love relationships function differently. How do you perceive yourself in a world that follows different structures? The Matriarx will open the experiencers’ horizons by raising their curiosity and by empowering them.This experience will attract everyone who is curious about societal change. Fracture directed by Azahara Cerezo, Mayte Gómez Molina Fractura (Fracture) is an immersive essay that explores the experience of virtual reality offered by devices such as Oculus Quest 2. As we surround ourselves in immersive worlds, virtual reality headsets scan the space around us and monitor our movements with four infrared cameras and two hand controllers equipped with sensors that gather information about our body and our gestures. The device itself, along with the commercial logics that insert it in society, hide a much more dense and obscure materiality than the minimalist aesthetic approach of tech hot spots such as Silicon Valley reveal. Immersion is also way older than the smooth, apparently history-less surface that personal technological devices offer, as this phenomenon is as old as the first human hearts that dreamt about the possibility of a layered reality. Fractura proposes a 360 journey through the threads that come out of virtual reality as we understand it today, connecting this phenomenon to its material and ecological consequences, as well as exploring its roots in human consciousness. This year, as part of the Cornwall Film Festival, we are exhibiting the very latest in virtual & augmented reality & 360 content at Fun Palace, Falmouth Art Gallery on Saturday 9th November 11-4.30pm

Commissioned by the Burton Art Gallery and Museum in 2024, it highlights material vitality, pollution, and climate change, merging animate and inanimate elements. It opens with spaceships over a strange ocean on a virtual planet, then transitions to images of the River Torridge and the riverbank of Cyberpunk 2077's Night City. Using footage, plastic trash, animated estuary stills, and 1940s/1980s public films, the film explores pollution and climate change connected to rivers and estuaries. Rain Directed by Vasilios Papaioannu Rain, as circular shapes of memory imprinted on the fast paced celluloid or as liquid moving sculptures of the present in digital form, documents a verbal interaction between two people. Synergy Directed by Emilie Bouet Conran and Honor West This short film explores identity and self-expression through the mediums of dance and fashion. We follow the journey of August, a gender-fluid person in their early twenties experiencing the mundanity of an urban, fast-paced environment. The film begins with August listening to a track of electronic dance music and immersing themselves in the audio. They are transported throughout the film to four dimensions in their mind's eye, reflecting separate versions of themself. The distinct layers of the music are performed by the different iterations of August, each exploring a corresponding movement vocabulary. The amalgamation of the separate versions of themself, and the way they dance, represents a synergy - an extended metaphor for how identity is fluid and multi-faceted. Audition Directed by Megan Harding Straight8 project starring the filmmaker's father as he reignites his love of acting. The North Wind and The Sun Directed by Anat Pollack Morphes Directed by Konstantinos Doxiadis Morphes is an experimental film born out of a sequence of disjointed memories. While there is some loose narrative tying the separate threads together, my main aim was to create a rhythm that suspends time and space. This was achieved through constantly shifting frame borders, extensive use of blocking and reflections to give more depth (or conversely obscure) the physical space around the camera, and strong musical guidance to give the viewer a fixed pace. Just mind you don't burst anything. Ouroboros Directed by SyL Shiyang Liu "Ouroboros" is a student short film that embarks on an experimental exploration of the cinematic medium. Seamlessly blending CG animation with live-action, the film delves into the metaphorical borderlands of truth and falsehood in our digitally-driven era. Re-creations Directed by Polina Moshenska This is the personal and intimate story of the friendship of three women and the struggle to live their everyday life while studying abroad in Scotland as a full-scale war takes place in their home country in Ukraine, where their families and close friends are. The film details the effort and obstacles they face, the everyday relationships in their new country and their pulsing connection to home, stronger, more dedicated and painful like never before. The film focuses on the search for beauty and necessary words whilst also exploring inner conflicts and the disintegration of memories. Flickering Light Directed by Jahnavi Misra, Apoorva Mundoor Flickering Light / Peeli Batti is a poem that encapsulates the experience of a woman whose loneliness and dissociation takes her to the brink of non-existence, disappearance and ghostliness. This is a stop motion film that employs mixed media techniques, including pixilation, paper-cut, found object and sand animation. Immortals Directed by Mark Durand Immortals is an experimental documentary short film shot in 8mm that explores the introspection of an artist, Bettina Szabo. The film delves into her relationship with her sense of belonging, her body, her imagination, and nature. Sometimes one must lose oneself to find oneself better, and burn everything down to start anew on a solid foundation. semblance Directed by Anna Lukala A cyanotype animation made from 738 single cyanotypes. This was a film made with people from my local neurodivergent community as a response to the question of what it feels like to be neurodivergent in today's society, and constantly feeling of not being seen or heard. Hunky Dory Directed by Steven Vander Meer Hunky Dory juxtaposes scenes of animal life with images of human existence, observing the quirky and unexpected ways in which we are similar. The meticulously hand-drawn animation is a visual smorgasbord, moving and morphing in perfect time to the banjo music of Béla Fleck and his bandmates in My Bluegrass Heart.

For many years, she taught Film at Kingston School of Art and her books include The Spirit of the Beehive (BFI Film Classics, forthcoming), Filming the Body in Crisis and The Place of Breath in Cinema. Her film criticism has appeared in Little White Lies, Sight and Sound, Dazed, Garageland, Another Mag and, for over a decade, she was a regular contributor to the Times Higher Education culture section. We provide training and networking opportunities, as well as the opportunity to work on the incredible Cornwall Film Festival! The applications for 2024 will open on 3rd May 2024. Intern Roles Volunteer Roles About our Internships We are seeking hard-working and enthusiastic individuals who would like an internship with a thriving film and media organisation. We are a media charity that holds an annual film festival, live events, yearly film screenings and programming, runs industry training, masterclasses and talks, education programmes and community projects. Our internship programme is designed to give you real-life experience across a range of industry roles including production; events management; social media; marketing; design; admin and more! We will give you an opportunity to work across all our organisational strands - festival, industry and events, community, education, and charity to gain valuable experience in varied roles within the creative industry. You may work as a production assistant on one of our live events or online masterclasses; a researcher or content creator for our social media; a designer of digital assets for one of our programmes or an event planner for one of our live events. We are looking for adaptable and enthusiastic people who are ready for a challenge and want to try their hand at lots of different roles within the media. Interns will be supported through their time at Mor Media via regular meetings and monitoring via their activity log sheet and development logs. This will also feed into the completion of an OCN Award which will see them complete two units, one will be linked to the creative skills needed to complete work required by the role, and one will be a reflective evaluation on the work they have done during their internship.
