  • TOO MUCH: MELODRAMA ON FILM | Mor Media Charity

Mor Media Charity sets up and runs community film clubs across Cornwall TOO MUCH: MELODRAMA ON FILM Melodrama in film has long been associated with women – the rare storytelling mode concerned with their inner lives and everyday struggles. ‘Women’s pictures’ employed melodrama to express longing, rage and desire in characters facing motherhood, infidelity, sexual abuse and scandal. Too Much will celebrate the female stars of melodrama who have drawn audiences to the cinema in their millions. At Cornwall Film Festival 2025, we are exploring a season of women’s experiences in this BFI-supported UK-wide season. BRIEF ENCOUNTERS 12:00 | SUNDAY 23.11.25 | THE POLY Dir. David Lean | 1945 | 1h 26 mins | UK | Drama, Melodrama | Certificate PG After a chance meeting on a train platform, a married doctor (Trevor Howard) and a suburban housewife (Celia Johnson) begin a muted but passionate, and ultimately doomed, love affair. With its evocatively fog-enshrouded setting, swooning Rachmaninoff score, and pair of remarkable performances (Johnson was nominated for an Oscar), this film, directed by David Lean and based on Noël Coward’s play Still Life deftly explores the thrill, pain, and tenderness of an illicit romance, and has influenced many a cinematic brief encounter since its release. Book Now VOLVER 7:30 PM | TUESDAY 9.12.25 | THE SAVOY PENZANCE Dir Pedro Almodóvar | 2006 | 2 hrs | Spain | Drama (Spanish Subtitles) | Certificate 15 Ghosts haunt the colourful streets and vibrantly cluttered homes of Almodóvar’s maternal melodrama, which finds three generations of women greeting hardship and challenge with boundless vitality. In the face of death, illness, sexual abuse and natural disasters, a sisterhood of resilience and determination emerges. With a light directorial touch and the luminous performances that have come to be expected of his regular collaborators, this ranks as one of the filmmaker’s most mature works. Starting by Penelope Cruz Book Now 16 days of activism The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence is an annual international campaign that runs from November 25th to December 10th, aiming to eliminate violence against women and girls. It begins on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and ends on Human Rights Day, linking these two important causes.
