The Eternal Daughter | Dir Joanna Hogg | 2022 | 1h 36 min | United Kingdom | Mystery / Drama | English | 12A | Relaxed Screening
Tilda Swinton wows in her double role as mother and daughter in Joanna Hogg's ghostly follow-up to The Souvenir: Part II. Swinton not only takes on the role of now middle-aged filmmaker Julie - a part originated by her real-life daughter, Honour Swinton Byrne - but also reprises the role of Julie's mother, Rosalind. The pair return to a former family home, which has since been converted into a hotel, in order to celebrate Rosalind's birthday - and also for Julie to work on her film. However, tensions eventually come to a head as a result of Julie and Rosalind's irreconcilable differences, as well as disturbances from the tragedies of Rosalind's past. Â
'a keenly discerning movie about the relationship of mother and daughter, who are bound together by a fierce love but kept apart by unbridgeable differences of character and of experience.' - The New YorkerÂ
'The Eternal Daughter is a serious, gentle moment of self-revelation for Joanna Hogg.' - The Guardian
