Documenting stories of ordinary people living through extraordinary times! About Coronavirus Stories & Community Stories Cornwall Documenting stories of ordinary people living through extraordinary times! Local communities in Cornwall talk about their experience of the Coronavirus Pandemic As the UK Government set out further changes to ease lockdown measures in England on 4th July 2020, Mor Media Charity launched Part 1 of the 'Coronavirus Stories' project after being awarded Community Funding. The idea for Coronavirus Stories came out of a conversation on how we document the experiences of communities during the Coronavirus crisis and resulting lockdown. How do we come together while staying apart? At a time when the news cycle is saturated with global issues, we wanted to turn our attention to our immediate community - the residents of our street. We asked St Thomas Street in Penryn, a mixture of residential, social, private and multiple housing to contribute their stories and their thoughts on the theme ‘together’ during this time, selecting strong and diverse voices, each showing a different side to community life here in Cornwall. The second cohort of stories explores the lives of Cornish people beyond the pandemic. Five media professionals, Gemma Gilbert (Ebb and Flow Media ), Annie Bungeroth, Morag Robertson (French & Scott Media ), Clare Tavernor (Phono Films ) and Amber Phipps, gathered records of people's experiences from all around the county. By contributing to this shared history, we hope to bring the community closer together and discover the diversity of experiences and perspectives that can be found behind every door on every street. The project shows a different side to community life in Cornwall creating important audiovisual records for future generations. “I’ve worked down South Crofty tin mine, been blown up three times, been shot twice, worked with the circus, skied all 'round the world… but never a pandemic like this, I don’t think anyone has… It’s unprecedented .” -Nick How it all started Documentary Filmmaker Clare Tavernor of Phono worked on the series of short audio interviews with the residents of the Street in Penryn, Cornwall. “I’m used to landing in sweltering climates and climbing into vans with armed guards in order to make films about art and culture around the world. When lockdown was announced, I wondered whether it would be the end of me documenting fascinating stories… but it turns out I only had to knock on my neighbours door.” - Clare Tavernor The Cornwall Film Festival charity was established in 2002 and run by a small team, freelancers and volunteers. It was founded by a group of filmmakers to advance the education of the public in the art of cinematography, filmmaking and other forms of moving images including films in the Cornish language. It now delivers not just the Film Festival, but clubs, events, education, training and opportunities in the media industry, working with groups facing social, cultural or economic exclusion from the richness of media culture. “I’m a member of extinction rebellion, so I have quite a sense that this is a crisis within a crisis, and the larger crisis of the environment is all around us… we’ve got to localise to survive ” — Sarah at Picketts Yard Listen To All Stories: About The National Lottery Community Fund The National Lottery Community Fund is the largest community funder in the UK – they award money raised by National Lottery players to communities across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Coronavirus Stories is a ViewPoint community media project production. Produced by Gemma Gilbert (Ebb and Flow Media ), Annie Bungeroth, Morag Robertson (French & Scott Media ), Clare Tavernor (Phono Films ) and Amber Phipps. Funded By Media Partners

BOOK TICKETS DIRECTOR BIOGRAPHY ASHER ROSEN Asher Rosen is a filmmaker based in London and Kisoro. Asher began his career as a screenwriter, developing projects with production companies such as The Forge Entertainment, Range Media Partners, and Gaumont UK. In 2021, Asher directed his debut short film, MEAT, produced by Scala Productions. Meat won multiple awards, playing at numerous BAFTA/Oscar qualifying festivals and culminating in a selection for the César Académie's ‘Golden Nights’ Programme. Asher's second short film THE RABBI'S SON (2022) won the Pears Short Film Fund, as well as playing at a number of BAFTA/Oscar qualifying festivals including Athens International Film Festival. In 2023, Asher began production on SMALL GODS, produced by Sovereign Films. Expanding on Meat, Small Gods is a docufiction drama inspired by the lives of its lead actors and wider Batwa community. STATEMENT Flo first mentioned the concept of small gods (ibigirwamana) the very day we met. Like almost all of the indigenous Batwa tribe, Flo has no access to her family’s ancestral lands, which were stolen to make way for conservation and tourism. When asked what the Batwa miss most from their old home in the forest, Flo mentioned animist deities attached to specific trees, caves, or water bodies. She referred to them as small gods. As we began building a narrative around Flo’s experiences, the concept suggested further resonances. The writing process started around the dinner table and continued late each night, as the cast recalled events from their lives. The whole crew was immediately captivated by the rich and epic drama with which the tales were told. From their own perspective, they were heroes fighting for their dignity, but to an uncaring outsider they were no more than street performers. Stylistically, Small Gods aims to depict their lives on a canvas just as mythic as the one they narrated. In doing so, it risks running against the traditions of documentary-infused cinema, in which first-time actors are rarely asked to plumb the same theatrical depths as trained professionals. Fortunately there was no doubt in my mind that they were up to the task. Flo and Bizi have, after all, been acting their whole lives - performing songs, dances, or impressions for the tourists that now flock to see Uganda’s gorillas. In the case of Bizi, this is how we crossed paths. Known among his friends as ‘monkey man’, Bizi will frequently drop to his knees and perform his gorilla impression at the sight of a foreigner. One such foreigner couldn’t get over the mis-match between his deep well of talent and his stature by the roadside. Making the film was a stand against this injustice. By taking the topic of performance as a thematic subject, platforming the casts’ overlooked talent, and anchoring the camera in their perspective, the hope was that we could somehow defy and defeat the view of tourist, he who comes for the gorillas but passed Bizi by… Having worked with the cast since our first short film together in 2021, I have been lucky enough to witness the transformation Small Gods has made in their lives. With the immense help of the production team, we have not only been able to purchase her and Bizi their own plots where they now grow food and graze their new cattle, but also build safe sturdy homes for them to live in for years to come. After three years in school, Tuyi now speaks English better than I speak Rufumbira, and I hope he will get the chance to answer questions about the film directly. I am forever grateful to have been able to enable this process - it all feels like a small miracle. Perhaps we are indebted to the small gods… IN FOCUS EXPLORING THE ART STORY TELLING FOR SCREEN Each year, Cornwall Film Festival celebrates exceptional emerging talent discovered through our competition entries. Talks at Cornwall Film Festival 2024 Talks, discussions and events - jump to the speaker profile below Mike Leigh Mark Kermode Mia Bays Dean Puckett Alice Lowe Bryony Stokes Nikolay Nikolov & Zachary Alfred Claire Peate Judith Noble Linda Williams Mike Leigh Saturday 23rd November 7.30 pm Gala - Hard Truths with Q&A Hard Truths, his sixteenth feature screens at the Festival and we are delighted to welcome our Patron and acclaimed filmmaker Mike Leigh to discuss his five-decade career. He started out in theatre in the mid-1960s before transitioning to television drama, which saw productions of his plays Nuts in May (1976) and Abigail’s Party (1977). The varying quality of TV production saw Leigh prefer to work on theatrical features, such as his debut Bleak Moments (1971) and his 1983 follow-up Meantime, a scathing portrait of Thatcher’s Britain. High Hopes (1988) and Life Is Sweet (1990) perfectly encapsulated Leigh’s balance of characterisation and social comedy, which can also be seen in Career Girls (1997), All or Nothing (2002), Happy-Go-Lucky (2008). Secrets & Lies (1996) is arguably the apotheosis of this style. It won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, Best British Film at the BAFTAs and was nominated for five Academy Awards. Another acclaimed film, Naked (1993), is arguably the filmmaker’s most splenetic attack on the British establishment and a drama of great verve and striking visual style. By contrast, Another Year (2010) saw Leigh grapple with the passage of time and is underpinned by profound compassion and mordant humour. Alongside his contemporary-set films, Leigh has produced a handful of period dramas whose canvases are as rich as they are potent in the themes they explore, from Vera Drake’s (2004) painful portrait of a well-meaning backstreet abortionist and Peterloo’s (2018) recounting of a dreadful episode in British history, to Topsy-Turvy’s (1999) exuberant portrait of Victorian theatrical partners Gilbert and Sullivan, and Mr. Turner’s (2014) visually rich, utterly engrossing study of one of Britain’s greatest painters.
