This involves promotion on social media, screenings at Cornwall Film Festival and our yearly ANIMATE Cornwall festival across the county. Essentially a hilarious romp featuring a group of inquisitive, accident-prone amphibians, this 7-minute short avoids hopping down the path of saccharine sweet anthropomorphism (we see all too much in animation) by blending its delicious dark subplot into proceedings. It’s a move that really lifts this short above and beyond a lot of the other films we see in the genre. Though the clever, unfolding plot was my own personal highlight of Garden Party, it would seem neglectful to gloss over that glorious aesthetic without mentioning it in more detail. From that meticulous opening shot of the frog gliding through the debris-filled pool to that incredibly textured frog rising from the plate of oyster shells, it’s the attention to detail here that truly impresses. It’s not only the frogs that are the carefully considered characters in the design though, the location feels as much of a player in the storyline as any of our long-legged protagonists and if anything it’s the conscientious depictions of the backgrounds that add that extra level to both the aesthetic and that compelling subplot. Screened in the ‘Horror: Thrilling and Chilling’ programme at this year’s Encounters festival (where it was easily the stand-out film of the session), Garden Party has been impressing audiences and juries at festival worldwide throughout 2016 & 2017. Like so many shorts I admire, the film incorporates multitudes of seemingly contradictory qualities: at a mere 5 minutes, there is really no wasted space, and yet it is exceedingly spare. Based off a celebrated Ron Koertge poem that clocks in at only 150 words, it allows for moments of subtlety and contemplation that are so necessary in visual storytelling—those perfectly blocked shots, held for an extra moment, that drive home the rich emotional interiority of its characters. It’s simultaneously one of the most humanistic films of recent memory, but it also stars no humans. He started out in theatre in the mid-1960s before transitioning to television drama, which saw productions of his plays Nuts in May (1976) and Abigail’s Party (1977). The varying quality of TV production saw Leigh prefer to work on theatrical features, such as his debut Bleak Moments (1971) and his 1983 follow-up Meantime, a scathing portrait of Thatcher’s Britain. High Hopes (1988) and Life Is Sweet (1990) perfectly encapsulated Leigh’s balance of characterisation and social comedy, which can also be seen in Career Girls (1997), All or Nothing (2002), Happy-Go-Lucky (2008). Secrets & Lies (1996) is arguably the apotheosis of this style. It won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, Best British Film at the BAFTAs and was nominated for five Academy Awards. Another acclaimed film, Naked (1993), is arguably the filmmaker’s most splenetic attack on the British establishment and a drama of great verve and striking visual style. By contrast, Another Year (2010) saw Leigh grapple with the passage of time and is underpinned by profound compassion and mordant humour. This role involves supporting our Short Film Manager by reviewing the suitability of submissions for consideration. You do not have to be based in the UK to apply, as all the viewing will be done remotely (access to a computer, and a stable internet connection is necessary). Main Duties and Responsibilities On average pre-selectors will view between 5-6 hours of content as we encourage voting from multiple selectors to ensure fairness. CFF receives around 300 submissions on average, but overall hours may increase if we go beyond this total - so some flexibility is encouraged. Viewing, and assisting with the submission process through our festival platform FilmFreeway.Our short film submissions will be from all types of genres but will be no more than 20 minutes in length. Meetings with key festival members, including members of the Awarding Jury (this will help you gain insight into the festival & filmmaking industry). You may work as a production assistant on one of our live events or online masterclasses; a researcher or content creator for our social media; a designer of digital assets for one of our programmes or as an event planner for one of our live events. We are looking for adaptable and enthusiastic people who are ready for a challenge and want to try their hand at lots of different roles within the media. Internships typically last 3-6 months and involve a time commitment of 6 hours a week, including our weekly team meetings. The 22nd edition of the Cornwall Film Festival is about to open for entries from across the globe CFF Short Film Competition 2024 This year's competition is open for entries! Categories Timeline Submitting The 23rd edition of the Cornwall Film Festival is about to open for entries from across the globe Now is the time to enter your short films & music video to our competition. In 2021 Cornwall Film Festival changed it's name to Mor Media Charity to incorporate the wide range of work the charity does across the year. Cornwall Film Festival still forms the core of MMC and we look forward to welcoming you to CFF2024 in Falmouth and across Cornwall. If your film is shortlisted your work will be judged by our panel of expert judges This included in 2020 Andy De Emmony (The Last Kingdom, Four Kids & It), Kate Cheesman (Call the Midwife), Joss Agnew (Poldark), Yazmin Joy Vigus (Mermaids) and many more. Shortlisted films will also be screened at the Mor Media/Cornwall Film Festival new Shorts Weekend (physically or digitally). Which will included screenings, talks, networking opportunities parties and more! Timeline Categories Our 2024 short film competition features a number of categories, including the following (see Film Freeway for more categories inc. non-narrative and UK shorts.) Narrative Short Film an short < 20 minutes made within the UK or anywhere in the world. VR, AR & Immersive Film Short, immersive films in the emerging categories of virtual reality and augmented reality. Experimental Film - Artist Moving Image - All Regions The best experimental short films from moving image artists based in the UK and beyond. Can include both non-narrative or narrative elements, and music videos. Cornish Short Film a short film < 20 minutes, made or produced in Cornwall. Student Shorts a short film made by anyone in full time education- anywhere in the world. < 20 minutes 2D & 3D Animated Film Short animated films in either 3D or the more traditional 2D style. South West Regional Shorts a short film made or produced by filmmakers in the South West Region of the United Kingdom. < 20 minutes Screen Stars of Tomorrow a short film < 20 minutes made by someone 18 years old or under as of the 31st July 2022. Well suited for those in education. Environmental, Climate & Sustainability Projects that address the Environment and/or Climate and/or Sustainability. This category includes all genres and nationalities. Your Short Film’s Journey at CFF We offer a wide entry window featuring different periods. Step One Your film will be judged and rated by our pre-selectors. Step Two Once pre-selectors have watched all the films, our industry professionals will curate the selected* work into different screening blocks. Step Three The winner and runners-up of each category will be placed in the competition for Best Festival Short Film and other awards. *you will only receive a “selected” notification if your work is going to be screened in a cinema or auditorium. This role involves supporting our Short Film Manager by reviewing the suitability of submissions for consideration. The ideal candidate will: Have an interest in short film Demonstrate an understanding film festival standards Be able work alone, organised and the ability to work to deadlines CLOSED
