- About Community Stories Cornwall | Mor Media Charity
Documenting stories of ordinary people living through extraordinary times! About Coronavirus Stories & Community Stories Cornwall Documenting stories of ordinary people living through extraordinary times! Local communities in Cornwall talk about their experience of the Coronavirus Pandemic As the UK Government set out further changes to ease lockdown measures in England on 4th July 2020, Mor Media Charity launched Part 1 of the 'Coronavirus Stories' project after being awarded Community Funding. The idea for Coronavirus Stories came out of a conversation on how we document the experiences of communities during the Coronavirus crisis and resulting lockdown. How do we come together while staying apart? At a time when the news cycle is saturated with global issues, we wanted to turn our attention to our immediate community - the residents of our street. We asked St Thomas Street in Penryn, a mixture of residential, social, private and multiple housing to contribute their stories and their thoughts on the theme ‘together’ during this time, selecting strong and diverse voices, each showing a different side to community life here in Cornwall. The second cohort of stories explores the lives of Cornish people beyond the pandemic. Five media professionals, Gemma Gilbert (Ebb and Flow Media ), Annie Bungeroth, Morag Robertson (French & Scott Media ), Clare Tavernor (Phono Films ) and Amber Phipps, gathered records of people's experiences from all around the county. By contributing to this shared history, we hope to bring the community closer together and discover the diversity of experiences and perspectives that can be found behind every door on every street. The project shows a different side to community life in Cornwall creating important audiovisual records for future generations. “I’ve worked down South Crofty tin mine, been blown up three times, been shot twice, worked with the circus, skied all 'round the world… but never a pandemic like this, I don’t think anyone has… It’s unprecedented .” -Nick How it all started Documentary Filmmaker Clare Tavernor of Phono worked on the series of short audio interviews with the residents of the Street in Penryn, Cornwall. “I’m used to landing in sweltering climates and climbing into vans with armed guards in order to make films about art and culture around the world. When lockdown was announced, I wondered whether it would be the end of me documenting fascinating stories… but it turns out I only had to knock on my neighbours door.” - Clare Tavernor The Cornwall Film Festival charity was established in 2002 and run by a small team, freelancers and volunteers. It was founded by a group of filmmakers to advance the education of the public in the art of cinematography, filmmaking and other forms of moving images including films in the Cornish language. It now delivers not just the Film Festival, but clubs, events, education, training and opportunities in the media industry, working with groups facing social, cultural or economic exclusion from the richness of media culture. “I’m a member of extinction rebellion, so I have quite a sense that this is a crisis within a crisis, and the larger crisis of the environment is all around us… we’ve got to localise to survive ” — Sarah at Picketts Yard Listen To All Stories: About The National Lottery Community Fund The National Lottery Community Fund is the largest community funder in the UK – they award money raised by National Lottery players to communities across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Coronavirus Stories is a ViewPoint community media project production. Produced by Gemma Gilbert (Ebb and Flow Media ), Annie Bungeroth, Morag Robertson (French & Scott Media ), Clare Tavernor (Phono Films ) and Amber Phipps. Funded By Media Partners

SUBMIT A FILM: https://www.shortoftheweek.com/submit/ FULL REVIEW: https://www.shortoftheweek.com/2019/10/10/garden-party-2/ GARDEN PARTY A Film by ILLOGIC https://www.bloompictures.tv/ "On paper, the synopsis to Garden Party seems ridiculous, but in reality it’s a stroke of genius as rewarding as the gorgeous animation the film is presented in. Essentially a hilarious romp featuring a group of inquisitive, accident-prone amphibians, this 7-minute short avoids hopping down the path of saccharine sweet anthropomorphism (we see all too much in animation) by blending its delicious dark subplot into proceedings. It’s a move that really lifts this short above and beyond a lot of the other films we see in the genre. Though the clever, unfolding plot was my own personal highlight of Garden Party, it would seem neglectful to gloss over that glorious aesthetic without mentioning it in more detail. From that meticulous opening shot of the frog gliding through the debris-filled pool to that incredibly textured frog rising from the plate of oyster shells, it’s the attention to detail here that truly impresses. It’s not only the frogs that are the carefully considered characters in the design though, the location feels as much of a player in the storyline as any of our long-legged protagonists and if anything it’s the conscientious depictions of the backgrounds that add that extra level to both the aesthetic and that compelling subplot. Screened in the ‘Horror: Thrilling and Chilling’ programme at this year’s Encounters festival (where it was easily the stand-out film of the session), Garden Party has been impressing audiences and juries at festival worldwide throughout 2016 & 2017. Winner of the ‘Best Graduate Short’ at GLAS Animation Festival, ‘Best Student Project’ at Siggraph and a ‘Special Jury Mention’ at Clermont-Ferrand, this is undoubtedly one of the best independent 3D animation’s we’ve encountered in sometime." - S/W Curator Rob Munday CREDITS Directed by: ILLOGIC: Florian Babikian, Vincent Bayoux, Victor Caire, Théophile Dufresne, Gabriel Grapperon, Lucas Navarro Soundtrack: Romain Montiel (Maaav) Reproduced on this channel with permission of the rightsholders Play Video Play Video 07:39 Lost & Found | Shortlisted for Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film ▶️ Submit a Film ➔ https://shortverse.com/submit A knitted toy dinosaur must completely unravel itself to save the love of its life. 🧶 _LOST & FOUND_ by Andrew Goldsmith & Bradley Slabe "This wedding of raw craft and storytelling is quite mature here. Generously funded by Screen Australia, we’re used to stop-motion being a contained craft, executed with models in small spaces, but this film is on a different scale entirely. The character animation is incorporated into a life-size sushi restaurant set that was built from scratch, and this decision pays off in the impressive camera direction that results—the production is able to go wide and really play with perspective and depth of field in a way that is rare for the form." - Curator Jason Sondhi FULL REVIEW: https://www.shortoftheweek.com/2018/12/08/lost-found/ *CREDITS* DIRECTED BY Andrew Goldsmith & Bradley Slabe PRODUCED BY Lucy J. Like so many shorts I admire, the film incorporates multitudes of seemingly contradictory qualities: at a mere 5 minutes, there is really no wasted space, and yet it is exceedingly spare. Based off a celebrated Ron Koertge poem that clocks in at only 150 words, it allows for moments of subtlety and contemplation that are so necessary in visual storytelling—those perfectly blocked shots, held for an extra moment, that drive home the rich emotional interiority of its characters. It’s simultaneously one of the most humanistic films of recent memory, but it also stars no humans. Its stop-motion animation is expressive, detailed and grounded, and yet it has no compunction about taking off on flights of fancy, segueing via delightful transitions into fantastical asides that play with scale and setting - S/W Curator, Jason Sondhi FULL REVIEW: https://www.shortoftheweek.com/2019/07/16/negative-space/ *CREDITS* Director / Writer: Max Porter & Ru Kuwahata Production: Nidia Santiago & Edwina Liard Co-production: Jean-Louis Padis Original poem: Ron Koertge Set Decoration: Ru Kuwahata, Marion Lacourt, Victoria Tanto, Max Porter Puppets: Ru Kuwahata, Satoru Yoshida, Tomas Gebcyznski, Max Porter Animation lead: Sylvain Derosne Additional animation: Eric Montchaud, Ru Kuwahata Cinematography lead: Nadine Buss Additional cinematography: Simon Gesrel, Max Porter Production / Post-production management: Nidia Santiago & Edwina Liard Production Assistants: Philippe Baranzini, Walid Païenda, Fred Borja, Lucile Pellerin, Maxime Lebalanc, Juluien Renrad, Willy Fair Post-Production: Max Porter, Sami Guellai, Pierre Morin, Ru Kuwahata Editing: Max Porter Music & Sound Design:Bram Meindersma **posée et enregistrée avec le soutien de la SACEM en association avec Ciclic Voice:Albert Birney Voice Recording: Keviln Hill, CAS Color Grade:Thibaut Pétillon Sound Mix: Matthieu Langlet —Studio Providers— Voice recording facility: Studio Unknown Decoration: Ciclic Animation Puppets: Moving Puppets Animation: Ikki Inc., Manuel Cam Studio, Tiny Inventions Post production: Ciclic Animation, Ikki Inc. In 2018, she was named a BAFTA Breakthrough Brit and in 2019 one of Campaign’s Top 10 Directors for her commercial work. EDGE OF SUMMER is Lucy’s debut fiction feature and was part of the BFI and British Council’s Cannes Great8 Showcase in 2023. Her second feature is in development with Film4. She is represented for Film and Television by Casarotto Ramsay and Associates. THE CAST FLORA HYLTON & JOEL SEFTON-IONGI are EVIE and ADAM Flora and Joel are both unknown actors. Flora is from Bath and Joel was cast locally in Cornwall. Edge of Summer is their debut feature. In casting, we were struck by Flora’s subtlety and the layers behind her performance. You could see within her both the ‘woman’ and the ‘child’. This was really wonderful to capture, especially in the interplay with her on-screen mother. It’s not easy to find a 12-year-old boy who is open to showing vulnerability. Joel was an outstanding listener and really connected to his character. He has such an open heart, kind soul and willingness to give everything, he was a joy to work with said The Director SKYER DENNETT is DAWN Skyer is also from Cornwall and has never acted before. She came to an audition when her brother was trying out for Adam. It can be tricky to find a child so young who doesn’t want to ‘perform’ in a very demonstrative way. Skyer has so much wisdom, wit and thoughtfulness, bringing so much of her totally authentic self to Dawn. JOSIE WALKER is YVONNE Josie’s recent film work includes BELFAST (dir Kenneth Branagh) and THE WONDER (dir Sebastián Lelio) as well as THIS IS GOING TO HURT for BBC. His PREVIOUS film credits include HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS: PART 1 (2010) and WONDER WOMAN. As a theatre actor his most recent credits include THIS HOUSE (The Garrick Theatre), KILLER JOE (Trafalgar Studios) and THE HAIRY APE (The Old Vic). EDWARD ROWE is PETE Edward is a Cornish Actor best known for his lead role in Bafta winning film BAIT (dir Mark Jenkin). The film won BAFTAs for Best British Film and Outstanding debut in 2020 and was nominated for several BIFIAs the same year. His more recent TV credits include HOUSE OF DRAGON (Amazon) and THE WITCHER (Netflix). THE 90 S It was important for me to set the film in the early 90s. Not only was I Evie and Adam’s age, but in a pre-digital era, life as a child was so different. Holidays were spent fighting the boredom and finding new adventures, children had their secret lives and parents had theirs. When questions and uncertainty struck, there was nowhere to go for answers, you shouted into the void, you had to work it out yourself. There was something so wonderful in this, the place imagination played self-discovery, the learning that came in the silence and the boredom, the endless hours to reflect. I knew I wanted to create a feeling of nostalgia and melancholy in the film, as innocence is lost and childhood itself becomes a ghost. However, I never wanted to go strongly ‘period’. We have a sense it is roughly 80s or 90s, but it doesn’t wear it on its sleeve. I think this timelessness is so important to creating a world that opens up and lets you and your own memories in.
